Recognitions

Prof. Gupta’s stellar eminence in national and international platforms is highlighted by the positions of responsibilities he has held in premier scientific/engineering bodies and societies. He has been President of the Indian Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics, the Indian Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, and the Indian Society of Mechanical Engineers. He was Vice President of the Indian National Science Academy and Chairman of its National Committee for IUTAM (International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics) and IMU (International Mathematics Union).

He brought honour to the country, when he was elected as member of the IUTAM Bureau (2008-12) and also its Congress Committee (2008-16) (see Tribute from President IUTAM) and three member international committee for the “Solid Mechanics” division of  the International Council of Industrial and Applied Mathematics world Congress (2009).

Additionally, he was member/chairman of several other national and international academic bodies. He has been council member of national institutions like the Indian Statistical Institute, Indian National Academies, Indian National Science Congress Association, Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi and many other institutes. He is Hon. Member of the World Innovation Foundation.

It was a great honour for the country, when International Society of Impact Engineering invited him as one of the 5 Honorary Members selected over the globe saying that-- this honorary membership contributes to recognize your fundamental contribution to our field.

He has been visiting Professor / fellow / invited to deliver guest lectures in universities in Armenia, Australia, Brazil, China, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, Malaysia, Norway, Poland, Russia, Singapore, South Africa, , Thailand, Trinidad, Turkey, UAE, UK, and USA. He has been serving on the Editorial Advisory Boards of International Journals of Mechanical Sciences, Int. J. of Impact Engineering, Int. J. of Crashworthiness, L. A. Int. J. of Solids and Structures, Thin Walled Structures, J. fatigue and fracture of Engg. Mat. and Str., Journal of Aeronautics Society of India, Proceedings of the Indian National Science Academy, Sadhna, Everyman’s Science and Defence Science Journal.

In last 10 years some of the prestigious lectures he has delivered are:

  1. It was an honour for him and the Indian science when invited to deliver a keynote lecture at the world congress of the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (2008) held at Adelaide, Australia.
  2. German National Academy of Sciences, Leopoldina, arranges lecture on a subject to be delivered by two highly known scientists one German and one invited from any foreign country (at times Nobel Laureates). Prof Gupta brought honour to the country when he was invited to speak on one such event in 2012 and the German Scientist invited was Prof. M. Kleiner, who was then the President of DFG. See below.

  3. Prof. Gupta was awarded the Indian National Science Academy’s “K S Krishnan memorial lecture” which he delivered during the annual meeting of the INSA in 2013.
  4. He delivered lectures at the Nobel Laureates Science Conclave held at Allahabad in the years 2009, 2010.
  5. In 2014, he delivered a plenary lecture to the 39th Solid Mechanics Conference held in Zakopane, Poland in September 2014, organized by the Institute of Fundamental Technological Research under the auspices of Committee on Mechanics, of the Polish Academy of Sciences.
  6. Plenary Lecture at the International conference on impact loading of light weight structures in Valencienne, France, held on 28 June to 1 July 2011.
  7. Plenary lecture at Timisoara, Romania, at the international conference on thin-walled structures, 5-7 September 2011.
  8. Plenary lecture at the AEPA 2012 (11th Asia Pacific Conference on Engineering Plasticity and its applications) conference held on   5-7 December   2012 at the Nanyang Technological University Singapore.
  9. Invited keynote lecture at the IUTAM Symposium on Growing solids, held in Moscow on 23-27th June 2015.

He has delivered invited lectures at the Russian Academy of Sciences Institutes, Polish Academy of Science Institute, Association of Asian Academy of Sciences, and Int. Council of Industrial and Applied Mathematics. 

Prof. Gupta is an academician of rare ability and recognized as such by the international scientific community. He is recognized internationally as the one who brought India on to the world research map of “Impact Mechanics”.
