Contributions to Augment Indian Efforts in Development of Science

  • IMPLAST Series of Conferences

Prof. Gupta is internationally recognised for the IMPLAST series of conferences, which he initiated in 1973. IMPLAST is a unique Indian event, which by now has become an essential part of the International Calendar, and is held with regular periodicity in India and countries across the world. This Indian event has been held in Australia (2000), Germany (2007) and USA (2010). South  Korea (2019).

Prof Gupta’s extraordinary leadership abilities and his international recognition are reflected in his capability to bring experts from all over the world together in IMPLAST even in very early conferences.

IMPLAST CONFERENCES

1.    The symposium IMPLAST 1979 held at IIT Delhi
The 3rd symposium on Large Deformations. This is one of the rare historic photograph perhaps all over the world, where in we can see most of the highly known international scientists and several known DRDO scientists and others.

2.    The symposium IMPLAST 2003 “ The 8th symposium on Plasticity and Impact Mechanics”, held at Vigyan Bhawan, Delhi

Prof. Gupta organised IMPLAST conference 2003 at Vigyan Bhawan. This was inaugurated by Dr. U. R. Rao, (Space) and Dr. V. K. Aatre (DRDO), The photograph of inauguration and participants.

4.    The symposium IMPLAST 2016 “ The 11th symposium on Plasticity and Impact Mechanics”.

He organized IMPLAST 2016 at the IIT Delhi on 11-14 December 2016 being attended by over 300 scientists from over 20 countries.  This IMPLAST was inaugurated by the then Hon. Defence Minister Shri Manohar Parikar, Secretary DST, Prof Ashutosh Sharma and  chairman DRDO. Dr S. Christopher.  The present Chairman DRDO Dr. Satheesh Reddy chaired the valedictory session.

It is a matter of honour for India that history of IMPLAST was published by the international Journal of Impact Engineering in its vol 27 (2002) pages 901-918.

These events provide a valuable forum for the Indian scientists to interact with several known international scientists.

He also initiated a series of Indo-Russian workshops in “Theoretical and Applied Mechanics”, being held highly successful in both India and Russia.

He has edited over a dozen volumes of IMPLAST and Indo-Russian workshops, which the scientific community has very well received.

IMPLAST series have brought prestige to India as this is only scientific events for which we have international bids.

In International forums: Importantly, he has been a voice of India in international forums in articulating the country’s long-term vision on key scientific and technical issues. He has represented India in forums like International Council of Scientific Unions, Third world Academy of Sciences, Associations of Asian Academies, International Unions of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, International Mathematics Union, International Council of Industrial and Applied Mathematics, and the world Academy of Science.

He has served as a chairman/member of a number of national committees including those of DRDO, DST, CSIR, ARDB, National Academies, and Scientific Societies. Agencies and Societies have been inviting him for plenary/ main lectures on important events. He has delivered several such lectures encouraging younger colleagues, research scholars, scientists and students to continue hard work and sustain excellence in the area. He readily helped in any initiative meant for advancement of science, and there have been several such events.

Prof. Gupta has dedicated his time and energy to the growth of Impact Science in the country and its visibility across the world.
